Real Betis manager Manuel
Pellegrini remnants optimistic as his team gears up to begin their La Liga
campaign against Girona FC at the Benito Villamarin Stadium this evening. While
confident, Pellegrini is mindful of the challenges ahead, mainly following a
summer of squad changes for Betis.
Girona, often regarded as a
"Champions League-caliber" side, pose a significant challenge despite
their own recent roster changes. Pellegrini acknowledged their strength,
stating, "It's vital to secure those first three points. Girona may have
lost key players, but they've reinforced well and remain a very competitive
team," as quoted by MARCA.
Betis are also undergoing a
period of transition, with the squad still evolving as the transfer window
remains open. Pellegrini commented, "We proceed towards this first match
with the players we've assembled so far, but there's still time to complete the
squad, so we'll see what happens."
One of the biggest difficulty for
Betis this summer was the leaving of forward Ayoze Pérez, a key figure in last
season's success. Pérez has joined Villarreal, a direct rival in La Liga.
Pellegrini admitted, "Ayoze had a great season and is now part of the
national team. His decision to join a direct competitor is tough for us."
Injuries have also impacted
Betis' preparations. New signing Cedric Bakambu is sidelined until late
September and Isco, a summer accretion, is still not at full fitness.
"Isco isn't ready yet, and we don't have a particular timeline for when
he'll be fully fit," Pellegrini confirmed.
On the need for further augmentations,
especially in attack, Pellegrini emphasized the importance of quality
additions. "If we bring in another forward, it has to be a key player.
We've lost ten players and only brought in five, including three internationals
and two captains. The new signings need to prove their worth."
Defensively, Betis have seen
major changes, particularly in the full-back and center-back positions.
Pellegrini highlighted the arrivals of Ricardo Rodríguez and Romain Perraud, as
well as the promising form of Diego Llorente during pre-season. "We've
overhauled our defense, and while it takes time to integrate new players,
they've adapted well."
When asked if Abde Ezzalzouli
might step up in the wake of Ayoze's departure, Pellegrini emphasized the need
for individual growth. "Every player must push themselves. Abde had an
inconsistent season last year, but as he matures, his performances will
improve. We also have other options like Juanmi and Chimy Ávila."
As for the captaincy,
Pellegrini has left the decision to the players. "The squad will vote, and
we'll see who they select."
Despite the ongoing
transitions within the squad, Pellegrini remains confident ahead of the Girona
clash. "Each season is different, but our commitment, ambition, and
determination remain the same. With 55,000 fans supporting us, I believe we'll
deliver."
