Who is Josh Shapiro, Kamala Harris’s Possible Vice-Presidential Pick?

Since taking office as Pennsylvania governor in 2022, Josh Shapiro has maintained high approval ratings, including notable support from Republicans. As he emerges as a leading contender for Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential pick, a decision is expected soon.

Shapiro, a former state representative and attorney general, was elected governor in 2022. His approval ratings remain strong, surpassing those of both Harris and the GOP ticket of Donald Trump and JD Vance.

Pennsylvania, which played a crucial role in confirming Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, is again a key battleground state. Harris is set to hold her first event with her potential running mate in Philadelphia on Tuesday, fueling speculation about Shapiro’s candidacy.

However, some progressives express concerns. In an open letter, around 50 national progressive leaders argued that Shapiro’s selection could be a setback for Democrats, citing controversial policy decisions on issues like school choice and the environment.

Shapiro’s support for school vouchers and his stance on environmental issues have drawn criticism. Additionally, his position on Israel has sparked debate. Shapiro, who is Jewish, has criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while supporting Israel's right to self-defense. His measures against alleged antisemitism and pro-Palestinian protests have also stirred controversy.

Despite these issues, some progressives, like Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, argue that Shapiro’s record on issues such as fighting predatory lending and challenging Wall Street banks makes him a strong choice. Uygur defends Shapiro’s positions on Israel, suggesting that his actions against Netanyahu and his fight against the Trump administration’s Muslim ban reflect his broader progressive credentials.
