Sage Steele demonstrated strong
support for Samantha Ponder after ESPN fired the “Sunday NFL Countdown” host, encouraging
that the world would soon see the real Ponder.
In an emotional video shared
on X (formerly Twitter), Steele, a former “SportsCenter” anchor, reflected on
Ponder’s dismissal alongside football analyst Robert Griffin III, both cut due
to ESPN's budgetary constraints.
“This is a loss
for ESPN but a gain for the rest of the
world,” Steele said. “You’re going to see the true Sam Ponder, and it’s all
going to come out. She’s a gem.”
Steele appeared visibly moved
as she spoke about her friendship with Ponder, which she said deepened over
their shared values and faith. “Samantha has taught me so much about God,
scripture, and standing tall even when it’s hard,” Steele shared. “She’s done
that at ESPN for years, even when things were tough.”
Steele praised Ponder as a
brilliant woman and a devoted mother, acknowledging how their friendship has
made her a better mother as well. She also expressed excitement for Ponder’s
future, adding, “Sam knows this is a blessing from God because there’s so much
more for her to do.”
Ending her message, Steele
expressed gratitude for their bond: “I’m so proud of you, Sam. I love you.” She
punctuated her post with a heart emoji, showcasing her deep admiration for her
friend.
