Lay day fun for surfers in Tahiti as they wait for Paris 2024 surfing to resume

Lay days are periods when surfing conditions are unsuitable for competition, causing events to be postponed. These days provide time for people to run errands like grocery shopping and laundry.

After excellent conditions on Monday, July 29, surfers at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 had two lay days. On August 1, the competition is expected to resume with women's round three, followed by men's and women's quarter-finals.

The break allowed everyone to reflect on a historic Monday filled with incredible barrel riding, a viral picture, and the unforgiving Teahupo’o waves during the men's round three.

During these lay days, surfers had free time, with many returning to the water, eager for any surfable waves. The popular spot has been the river mouth at the End of the Road, a landmark known for its proximity to Teahupo’o. It's an hour's drive from Papeete, and once there, you either surf, head to your accommodation, or return.

Olympic champion Carissa Moore, world champion Caroline Marks, and fellow American Caity Simmers enjoyed the river mouth action. Australians Molly Picklum and Ethan Ewing were also surfing on Tuesday. Surfers will always find rideable waves.
