Mumford
High School's head football coach, William McMichael, recently considered hiring
Connor Stalions, a former Michigan football staffer, as the team's new defending
coordinator. Stalions, notorious for his alleged participation in a
sign-stealing scandal at the University of Michigan in 2023, has been working
with the Mumford team for months, in spite of the news of his hire just now
coming to light.
McMichael
explained that Stalions has been teaching his players how to break down film,
the intricacies of playing college football, and the hard work it requires.
Although Stalions gained notoriety for his role in Michigan's controversial
sign-stealing operation, McMichael emphasized that his focus with the Mumford
team is on his defensive expertise and ability to analyze opponents’
tendencies.
McMichael
revealed that when he introduced Stalions to the players, none of them
recognized him or were aware of the allegations. When asked about their
reactions, McMichael highlighted Stalions’ reputation as a skilled defensive
strategist, which is what he stressed to the team.
Though
Stalions' past has raised questions, McMichael expressed no concerns about the
message it might send, stating that the NCAA issues are unrelated to high
school football. As for potential criticism from parents or fans, McMichael
remarked that everyone is entitled to their opinion, likening it to political
differences.
Previously
an assistant coach at Belleville High School, where he helped secure multiple
state championships, McMichael is determined to improve Mumford’s record, which
saw just one win last season. He’s confident that Stalions’ experience with a
national championship-caliber defense will give the team a competitive edge,
noting, “We want the Michigan defense, and I don’t think anybody knows it
better than he does.”
